DIRECTOR & CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER
Toby Maple
Toby’s role at IIMBE is to help you realise value from improved information management. This value could be in capital delivery (through projects), operational efficiency (through asset management), or organisational successes (enterprise-wide). Recognised as an industry leader in Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Digital Engineering (DE), Toby understands both the challenges and opportunities facing large asset-owning organisations when implementing change. Using his broad experience and people-centric approach, he helps you navigate this shift effectively.
With over two decades of experience, Toby has enabled numerous organisations that work in the built environment to leverage better information management practices. This includes using the data in BIM for design, construction, and long-term asset management (where 70% of the asset lifecycle costs are). Working with the IIMBE team, Toby has helped state governments and their agencies implement BIM and digital asset approaches that have transformed the industry. He’s also part of numerous Standards Australia working groups (technical committees that play a vital role in developing and revising Australian standards), advising on topics like ISO19650 standards in BIM, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Digital Twins.
Toby’s insider knowledge for information management projects: “Before introducing new digital products or processes, define why they’re needed. Just because a piece of technology can do something doesn’t mean it will be useful for your people or your use cases. Understanding why you want to change, the benefits of the new way, and structuring a robust implementation and change management plan are key. We’ve seen many implementations fail in organisations due to the lack of ongoing commitment. But, if you know your ‘why’ from the beginning, you’ll be united under that purpose.”
